Dave was born in Valley City, which is set in the heart of the Sheyenne River Valley in Eastern North Dakota. At a young age he found that working with his hands to be very natural and relaxing.

Recently, Dave has combined his love of working with his hands with design through academic experience and his personal work. In 2001, he started at Bismarck State College for Visual Arts, and in 2007 completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at North Dakota State University.

“Through the years I've tried my hand at various occupations, most of which required physical labor. To name a few work experiences, I've dismantled equipment for large factories, been an automotive technician, done concrete construction, and have also raised ducks. All my life experience has helped to develop my ability to use my hands in co-operation with my other senses and thus has become automatic when using tools and instruments”. Dave has also realized his interest in recycling. Its materiality has become the main component of his work
